first shop-in-shop is occupied by a brunch café +QQQ serving Jeongeup’s
specialty products including fruit jam and butter whereas the second location
is used by a customized perfume shop Aroma Mood, selling fragrance products reminiscent

SKC publishes 2021 Sustainability Report
Coming up with ESG visions and three main goals
from our core issues and effort from Deep ChangeThe Company is in promotion of 2030 Plastic Net
Zero; 2040 Greenhouse Gases Net Zero under the ESG vision “Origination for the
Next Generation”Announcing 2021 as the first year of SKC’s
sustainable management ··· stressing the importance of the effort to create a
better future/world
Having announced 2021 as the first year of its
sustainable management, SKC published its 2021
Sustainability Report, disclosing its ESG vision “Origination for the Next Generation.” The
Company also set 2030 and 2040, respectively, as the target years for its
accomplishment of its goal of Plastic Net Zero and Greenhouse Gases Net Zero.
On July 23, SKC put up its 2021
Sustainability Report with the said content on its homepage. The Company said that it drew up the report,
which set its ESG vision and three sustainable management-related aims in
consideration of issues in which inside/outside stakeholders are interested and
an effort for Deep Change, which came up with through materiality
assessment.
SKC set “origination,” which means the beginning
and creation as its identity as a material business that engages in production
of materials serving as the basis of goods and contributes to industrial
development. In addition, it set the direction of its sustainability activities
as “For the Next Generation” as one in pursuit of mankind’s sustainable future.
The Company has also come up with the top three
sustainable management-related aims. It categorized keywords extracted from the
nine core issues, SKC Vision, and effort for Deep Change identified through materiality assessment as follows: ▲ Origination with Specialty, ▲ Origination for a
Sustainable Environment, and ▲ Origination for Stakeholders.
The report is focused on the three sustainable
management aims. It displays the Company’s commitment to the happiness of
stakeholders through the following: provision of support for changes in the
world through daring investment in mobility, semiconductors, and eco-friendly
materials, contribution to sustainable environment, targeting 2030 Plastic Net
Zero and 2040 Greenhouse Gases Net Zero, and strengthening the win-win effort,
including the new material technology-based open platform promoted from 2017.
The Company strived to make the report include more substantial content
than the one published last year, which was the first year of its publication
of the Sustainability Report. Compared to last year’s, which was focused on the
introduction of the results of relevant activities carried out, this year’s
included an introduction of ESG activities carried out by businesses in which
the Company invests. Compared to last year’s, the report for this year also
expanded the scope of disclosure per Global Reporting Initiative GRI and newly
reflected the criteria recommended by the Sustainability Accounting
Standards Board (SASB) and the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).
Commenting on the matter, an SKC official said, “This
year will be our first year for establishment of the ESG management
organization system, both in name, reality, and the execution of sustainable
management. We will push forward with the top three sustainable management goals
and build the groundwork for governance, compliance, and safe environment in a
bid to make a better future/world.”
In 2020, SKC created a total of 487.2 billion
won (a 23.6% y-0-y increase) worth of social value, as a result of
strengthening ESG management, starting with DBL (Double Bottom Line) management
for simultaneous pursuit of economic and social value in 2019. The said amount
is made up of the effect of indirect economic contribution (398.6 billion won),
including tax payments/dividend payouts, business-based social results (83.0
billion won), and social contribution-related social results (5.6 billion won).

SK nexilis, jointly with City of Jeongeup, to play lead role in invigoration of local economy with signature items.
To strive to invigorate the local economy
jointly with the City of Jeongeup in order to enhance social value through
win-win cooperation To provide spaces that remain idle to young
startup owners to form unique signature streetscapes
SK nexilis, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SKC (President
LEE Wan-jae) as one specializing in copper foil production, plans to strive to
invigorate the local economy jointly with the City of Jeongeup, including the creation
of tourist attractions and provision of support for small store owners in order
to enhance their competitiveness.
On June 30, SK nexilis President Kim Yeong-tae
signed a business agreement with the City of Jeongeup for the establishment of
the groundwork for a win-win success for the local community in a ceremony held
at Jeongeup City Hall. Under the agreement, the company plans to form a joint
task force to strive for the aforementioned end.
Jeongeup, where SK nexilis has its domestic
production foothold, boasts beautiful natural scenery and is easily accessible
from across the country via KTX or otherwise, but visitors have said that the
place does not have many attractions that they can spend their time enjoying. In
this regard, SK nexilis and the City of Jeongeup will work together to create
contents designed to maximize the city’s attractions.
First of all, the plan includes the formation of
unique signature streetscapes in Jeongeup. They will invite young startup
owners to run pop-up shops, using store spaces that were left idle.
They will also run a program designed to provide support for small store owners
so they may grow in the signature streetscapes. The plan includes educational
sessions designed to enhance their business capabilities, one-on-one coaching
sessions, provision of relevant consulting, and support for space remodeling.
They will also periodically hold a Food Truck
Festival, inviting those that have earned fame for their specialty food. Development
of tracking courses along the routes where visitors can relish the natural
beauty of Naejangsan Mountain, walkathon, etc. will also be included in the
plan.
Their plan also includes running inexpensive
tourist houses by remodeling dilapidated motels taken over from the current
owners.
Commenting on the matter, SK nexilis President
Kim Yeong-tae said, “Jeongeup is where we have built our business capability.
We will strive to contribute to the invigoration of the local economy and
enhance social value as a member of the local community by fulfilling our part
of the agreement signed with the City of Jeongeup.”

SKC promotes innovation in governance structure to make it compare favorably with relevant global standards.
Outside directors elected to head up four
committees by Board of Directors … Operation of BOD centered around outside
directors Has launched outside director-only Insider
Trading Committee for stringent deliberation of inside trading, with specially
related people and their investment
SKC (President Lee Wan-jae) intends to encourage
more participation of outside directors in the BOD’s activities, in a bid to
enhance the transparency of the company’s governance structure, and make firm
the groundwork of sustainable management. As part of this intention, the company
will fill the positions of the chairs of all BOD committees with outside
directors and launch the Insider Trading Committee, which is participated in only
by outside directors to look into insider trading more stringently.
On March 15, SKC submitted a report on the plan
for the innovation of the company’s governance structure with such content. Then,
the company will announce its Governance
Structure and Charter approved by the periodic General Meeting of Shareholders
and the BOD on March 30. Follow-up steps will then be taken, such as the launch
of new committees.
SKC will first launch three BOD committees. The
outside director-only Insider Trading Committee will stringently deliberate
matters, like the company’s transactions, with specially related people,
including controlling shareholders and their investment in the company. The
committee will check the transactions with them and present its opinions.
The Personnel Committee will assume the role of
recommending outside director candidates, which used to be handled by the Outside
Director Candidates Recommendation Committee, and carry out the task of checking
inside directors. For this, the committee will be given the right for the evaluation
of/compensation for inside directors, including the CEO, and for recommendation
of the CEO. The committee will be headed up by an outside director for its
independence.
The ESG Committee will deliberate the following
in advance: the Company’s mid/long-term strategy, the strategy for ESG
promotion, large-scale investment projects, the annual management plan, etc. The
committee will review the direction of the Company’s ESG management and will periodically
monitor how the relevant matters are executed. It will also be headed up by an outside
director.
The existing Audit Committee, which will also be
only composed of outside directors, will carry out the function of integrated
supervision of risk management, in addition to accounting audits, to enhance
the company’s transparency in management and be well ready for crises. It will
have the rights for non-financial audits, like compliance-related audits, the election
of outside auditors, and consent to the election/dismissal of inside directors.
Moreover, SKC will step up its efforts to
enhance the BOD’s expertise and diversity. This year, the company will elect
female outside directors who specialize in environment and laws. Next year, the
company will increase global ESG experts and the like.
Commenting on the company’s plan, an SKC
official said, “We have strived to enhance the BOD’s transparency and
independence, including the separation between the President and the BOD Chair
and expansion of items that should obtain the BOD’s approval over the past few
years. We will make this year the first year of ESG management and strive to make
our governance structure one that compares favorably with relevant global
standards, and which firmly lays the groundwork for sustainable growth.”

SKC (President: Lee Wan-jae) is receiving applications
for the 4th
round of SKC Startup Plus, which is a new material-related technology contest. The annual event, which marks the 4th
round this year, is a program designed to help businesses with promising
technologies to further develop commercially, through the tangible/intangible
assets of the New Material-related Technology-based Open Platform, in which
eleven relevant institutions participate.
SKC will receive the aforementioned applications, starting
March 9. Startups (to-be) and SMEs with creative ideas or technologies related
to highly-functional industrial materials or those with added value, such as
eco-friendly/mobility/semiconductor, may apply. They need to submit their
application by email to tnwls3654@ccei.kr by April 13, referring to the public
notice at the homepage of the Ulsan
Center for Creative Economy & Innovation (UCCEI).
About ten businesses will be selected and the result is
to be announced on April 30. SKC will provide them with support funds for the commercialization
of their technologies and share its management know-how and R&D infrastructure,
which has been accumulated over the past 40 years as a business specializing in
materials, with them.
SKC will also provide support for the winners in sectors
related to technology, finance, safety/environment, and startups, through its
consulting service, Industrial Master, which started last year. Industrial
Master is a platform service linking small-sized material businesses with
industrial experts for mutual cooperation.
Institutions selected to work with SKC in this event will
add their expertise. The National Academy of
Engineering of Korea (NAEK), for one, is to provide professional consulting in management,
factory operations, and R&D. The Korea Technology Credit Guarantee Fund (KOTEC/Kibo) will engage in
technology matching that is required by the selected businesses. The Korea Startup Forum is to provide support for the development
of startups. Law firm, Sejong, will provide legal consulting.
The UCCEI
will provide education and subsequent programs that are required for the operation
of the businesses. The Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) is to help
the businesses with their commercialization and upgrade of their
research/planning capability. The Office of Strategic R&D Planning will provide support in policy-related education and
systems improvement. Deloitte Anjin LLC is to provide
support for consulting in accounting and linkage with global investment institutions. Shinhan Bank is to provide financial support concerning
the evaluation of the technological value of the businesses. The Uslan Technological
Center is to provide technological support for ventures/SMEs.
SKC jointly established the open platform with the UCCEI,
etc. in 2017 and started SKC Startup Plus in the following year. Since then, it
has poured effort into the expansion of the open platform, including the
increase in the number of participating institutions with professional
capability and the businesses. In May 2020, SKC was selected as the 14th
Business Engaging in the Voluntary Win-Win
Cooperation by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups (MSS) as an apparent result of
such efforts.
Commenting on the event, an SKC official said, “We will
do what we can to strengthen the country’s material sector ecosystem by
developing promising businesses that specialize in the materials sectors, in
cooperation with the institutions that are participating in the new
material-related technology-based open platform.”
