SK Nexilis Develops 'High-Adhesion Carbon-Coated Copper Foil' for Next-Generation Batteries
2026-10-20

● Special carbon coating applied to the copper foil surface... Suppresses electrode 'delamination' and significantly improves battery life and safety.

● Simultaneous compatibility with high-silicon anode materials and dry electrode processes... Secures versatility for next-generation batteries.

● Initiates pilot system construction... Aims for commercialization in the second half of 2027 by securing mass-production technology.

SK Nexilis, SKC’s investment company for secondary battery copper foil, announced on the 20th that it has successfully developed 'High-Adhesion Carbon-Coated Copper Foil,' a core material for next-generation batteries.

The newly developed technology features a special carbon coating on the surface of the copper foil to enhance adhesion with the anode material. This suppresses 'delamination'—which can occur due to the volume expansion of silicon anode materials—enhancing the structural stability of the electrode and contributing to improved battery life and safety.

This technology was developed in response to the battery industry's recent trend of increasing silicon content in anode materials to boost energy density. In particular, the focus was placed on strengthening the adhesion between the anode material and the copper foil, which becomes increasingly crucial as silicon content rises.

The copper foil developed through this technology can also be applied to the dry electrode process, known as a next-generation battery manufacturing method. The dry process is gaining attention because it can reduce battery manufacturing costs and energy consumption. Since stably securing adhesion between the electrode material and copper foil is also critical in the dry process, SK Nexilis’ newly developed technology is expected to have high applicability.

To prepare for full-scale mass production, SK Nexilis is setting up a pilot production system for the high-adhesion carbon-coated copper foil. Currently verifying process stability, the company plans to secure mass-production technologies and push for commercialization in the second half of 2027.

An official from SK Nexilis stated, "This development of high-adhesion carbon-coated copper foil is a meaningful achievement to address technological shifts in the next-generation battery market, such as the expansion of high-silicon anode materials and the adoption of dry electrode processes. We will proceed seamlessly with commercialization optimization while strengthening our competitiveness in the next-generation battery materials market through continuous technological development."
